Gurghiu
has always been a royal castle (castrum regale). During
the war against the Austrian domination, Rabutin, the
emperor's general, after a several months' siege, conquered
and destroyed the castle. It is believed that the stones
of the destroyed castle were used for building the Bornemissza
castle in 1733.
It is built in Baroque style,
but in the course of time, it underwent many architectural
modifications. In 1893 the forest school was founded in
the castle, which, at present, is the seat of a hunting
museum. In the dendrology park that surrounds the castle,
there is a great variety of trees: 29 exotic species and
about 100 aboriginal ones. |
