Saschiz
is located on Valea Scroafa, 20 km away from Sighisoara. Saschiz
developed on the structure of a Neolithic settlement, defining
its solid shape of an inhabited area in the Bronze Age. Documentary
evidence dates from 1308-1310. Documentary evidence of Cloasterf
dates from 1267 (poss. Praaed.Nicolai); Mihai Viteazu -(Zoltan)
1341. At the end of the XVth century, in 1496, the fortified
Evangelic Church was built. Its tower is quite similar to the
Clock Tower of Sighisoara castle. In the church yard, some of
the gravestones bear very old inscriptions( 1572, 1677etc.).
About 1 km away from the village, on the top of a hill (more
500m high) there lies - touched by the imprint of time - the
Saxon castle. Its construction began in the XIVth century. The
walls (7-9 m high) and the 6 towers were meant to defend the
inhabitants of Saschiz and of the surrounding villages in time
of war. It is worth mentioning that the Evangelic church-castle
in Cloasterf (1521 - 1524), in spite of its old age, is still
in a good condition. |

The
fortress church, built in 1493-96, in Gotic style erect in
the central part of the village in the market place, its clock
tower is similar to the one in Sighisoara.
The 6 towerd fortress is situated
nearby the village (surrounded by walls of 7-9 m), was built
between the XIV-XVI centuries and provided shelter for the
population in the area, in case of enemy attaks.

In
the XVIIth century Saschiz was a veritable center for church
carpenters and painters, famous in Transylvania for the ceilings
and pulpit crowns they painted with great artistry. The most
famous was Umling LÕrinc. The "sgrafito cobalt"
ceramics of Saschiz is also well-known - blue enameled ceramics,
with a metallic lustre, " born" in Saschiz somewhere
about 1700. |
