COUNTY TOWNS

Located in the Praid depression, Sovata is situated on the lower stream of the Târnava Mica River, at the confluence with the Sovata River, at the south-western basis of the Gurghiu mountains, on a huge salt block. It is located 55 km away from Târgu Mures and 30 km away from Reghin.

Sovata is a balneary and climatic spa of general interest, functioning all year round. The riches of the spa consist in the salted waters that form several lakes, among them the most important being Ursu Lake. Besides these ones there are several other lakes: Alunis, Verde, Negru, Rosu and Mierlei Lake, all having chlorinate waters with a high sodium concentration with heliothermic phenomena.
The spa has a sedative climate with healthy air, cool summers and warm winters. At the same time, although Sovata is situated on a salt block, it does not lack vegetation, on the contrary, its surroundings are covered by rich flora. Around the lake there are many filberts, as well as deciduous or pine trees. The forests have a rich hunting fauna, as well as special sceneries that invite the tourist to take a walk in the woods. All these make Sovata resemble a great natural park. The Sovata spa is also declared a natural reservation.
From all the natural elements, Ursu Lake stands out, the most important heliotherm and salted lake in Romania. The spa is indicated for gynecological treatments, rheumatism, post-traumatic treatment, neurology, endocrinology, cardiovascular etc. It also has a modern treatment base inside the hotels, apart from the one from the lakes.
The town is known even from Roman times. They took the salt from Sovata and transported it to Apullum. Many coin and ceramic collections were discovered here.
The town was mentioned in documents in 1597, associated with the healing water from the area. In 1884 it became a spa and in 1952 it was declared town. The spa-town includes: Capeti, Ilies, Sacadat, Sarateni. It also offers interesting tourism site: the traces of the settlement dating from the Roman age, the "Schimbarea la fata" Orthodox Church, buit in 1931, the tourism inns "Tivoli" and "Stâna de vale", the Ursu Lake natural reservation, the surrounding mountainous area. From Sovata the tourists can take trips to Praid, to the salt-mine, to Corund - a particular ceramic area or to Târgu Mures and Sighisoara.
