Ungheni
is situated on the middle stream of the Mures River, where
the Niraj River runs into the Mures River, 11 km away from
Târgu Mures, on the international European road E 60,
Târgu Mures - Cluj Napoca.
The town is located in the Mures
meadow, between the Madaras Pod - Târnave hills and
Niraj hills, as well as in the lower part of the Niraj valley.
It has a railway station on the route Târgu Mures -
Razboieni and it is an important traffic crossing point: towards
Cluj-Napoca, towards Bucuresti through Acatari, towards Târnaveni
through Cerghid, towards Târgu Mures. Documentary evidence
dates from 1264 under the name of Naradtew. The including
villages were attested as follows: Cerghid - 1438; Cerghizel
- 1438; Moresti - 1567; Sausa - 1414; Vidrasau - 1383. In
1601 general Basta's troops set the place on fire, causing
the death of a large number of inhabitants. The devastating
attack on Ungheni continued in 1848 from the Austrian army.
Despite these facts, in time, the place was repopulated and
managed to recover from the disasters.
In the Moresti village, on the
Podei plateau, vestiges of human settlements that had their
origin in the Paleolithic Age, up to the early Feudalism,
were discovered (1951-1955). Silexes, Neolithic ceramic from
the Cris and Cotofeni culture were also discovered here. A
necropolis dating from the Bronze Age, a Dacian settlement
of the Latene type and an incineration Daco-Roman necropolis
were also identified here.
In the 9th-10th century there
was an important citadel in Moresti, one of the residences
of Voivode Gelu. In the Cerghizel village there is the "Sfintii
Arhangheli Mihail si Gavril" wooden Church dating from
the 18th century. During World War II, Ungheni was the stage
of several battles carried out for the liberation of the northern
part of Transylvania.
Târgu-Mures's airport
is located in Vidrasau. In Recea, near the airport, the "Maica
Domnului" Orthodox Monastery was built after 1990, becoming
a praying place for thousands of Christian all over the country.
In the latest years Ungheni
has distinguished itself thanks to the quality Neumarkt beer
it produces, holding an important place in the national market.
On the 18th of April, 2004, Ungheni was declared town, its
citizens hoping for a better future once with the opening
of the Vidrasau industrial park, with the development of the
airport and with the accumulation of further investments.
